Goalsetter Basketball Goal Recalled
Goalsetter recently recalled 18,000 wall-mounted basketball goals due to unexpected detachment from the wall. This recall involves all Goalsetter Adjustable and Fixed Wall Mount Series and GS Baseline Series 72-inch, 60-inch, 54-inch, and 48-inch wall-mounted goal systems. There were multiple reports of the wall-mounted goal detaching from the wall and falling on consumers. These consumers suffered fractured legs and facial injuries, and in 2018, a 14-year-old boy died.
Family Sues After Child Dies from Falling Basketball Hoop
As described in court documents, the family of Nolan Gerwels, rushed to his aid after hearing “piercing screams”. It was a gruesome scene, as he was crushed to death and his family hoisted the massive 260-pound metal and glass mount off him. The boy’s mother then attempted to perform CPR as he said his last words and breathed his final breaths. In 2018 they sued Dick’s Sporting Goods, Goalsetter Systems, Century Builders, and EW Construction. The system that fell is made by Goalsetter Systems and sold by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Neither of the companies provided the proper hardware or instructions to mount the system. Century Builders constructed the home and hired EW Construction to install the basketball hoop and backboard. The lawsuit claims the two companies did not properly install the system. It says they used 2-inch lag bolts that did not go into sturdy studs or any solid wood structure, no wall anchors were used, and no chains or backup safety systems were installed. The Gerwel family attorney disputed that Nolan’s death wasn’t a freak accident, it was a preventable tragedy.
Basketball Goal Recalled Four Years Later
Four years later, in the present day, the basketball goal was finally recalled. The company is contacting all known purchasers from 1999-2022 stating “consumers should stop using the recalled wall-mounted basketball goals immediately and contact Goalsetter for free removal of the basketball goal with a full refund or a free inspection of the installed wall-mounted basketball goal and free installation of an additional safety bracket.” You can contact Goalsetter at 855-951-7460 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or on its website.
Filing a Product Liability Claim
If you or a loved one have been injured due to a Goalsetter basketball goal collapsing, you may qualify to participate in a class action lawsuit. Many product liability lawsuits are strict liability claims, meaning rather than proving the defendant was negligent, an attorney can make a case because the defendant made or sold a product that caused harm.
