Firework Safety during the Fourth of July-Summer Safety Tips
The beginning of July is full of patriotism and plenty of fun. Laughter, fireworks, and the old red, white, and blue. However, it is still necessary to be precautious when taking part in the annual traditions that summer and the fourth of July bring. This includes the safe and responsible use of fireworks. Here are some tips on how to avoid danger while using these explosives:
Do Not Use Illegal Fireworks
The first step of firework safety is determining what is legal in your state. Forty-nine out of fifty states in the United States allow consumer-use of fireworks. However, each state has its own laws of the size and what type of fireworks can be used. Go on to your state website for more information.
Read Caution Labels
Once you have purchased legal fireworks in your state, read instructions on how to use them. It is also important to read all the caution labels located on the firework to ensure you are using them safely and properly.
Firework Time
When it is time to use your firework, make sure you are OUTDOORS in a clear area away from people, buildings, and vehicles. A sober adult with protective gear, including safety goggles, should be the only one in charge of the firework. The next steps include:
- Have the necessary protective gear and a water bucket/ hose available.
- Make sure the firework is stable and pointing up and away from any people, pets, or objects.
- Never shoot fireworks from metal or glass containers
- Light one firework at a time and move away quickly once it is lit.
- If you are using handheld fireworks keep them at an arm’s length and avoid others
Disposing of Fireworks
After the fireworks have been used, dispose of them by soaking them in water and disposing of them in a metal trashcan to avoid later combustion.
With these necessary precautions as well as responsible and safe decisions, fireworks can be used as a fun event activity. Be safe and happy Fourth of July!
