September Recall: Hyundai and Kia
As of September 5th, 2020, over 600,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada are being recalled due to a brake fluid leak that could cause fires.
This recall applies to Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015, Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015, and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015.
The report released on Thursday, September 3rd confirmed that brake fluid was found leaking inside the hydraulic control unit for the anti-lock brakes. This has the potential to cause electrical shortages which could result in a fire.
The fires can start even when the car is off. Therefore, consumers have been instructed to park their vehicles outdoors until their vehicles have been inspected and, if necessary, repaired. The companies have also warned consumers that if the anti-lock brake light comes on, they should not continue driving their vehicle and instead, contact the dealer. If there are any warning lights on, people are advised to disconnect the 12-volt battery by removing the positive cable.
Kia’s recall will officially begin on October 15th and Hyundai’s recall will officially begin on October 23rd. Both dealers will inspect the control units and fix any necessary parts at no cost to the owners.
