Water Safety- Swim Safe, Swim Happy

With warm weather approaching, pools and beaches are now open to the public. The summer weather brings many fun activities, especially ones in the water. While having some fun in the sun it is important to take the necessary precautions to have a safe and enjoyable time cooling off. Here are some water safety tips to kick off your summer:

Water Safety Tips

Swimming Lessons

Before hopping into the deep end (or shallow end) it is very important that you have the proper knowledge on how to swim. When children between the ages of 1 and 4 are enrolled in swimming lessons the risk of drowning decreases by up to 88%.

Supervision

Never leave a child unattended. Whether a child is in or out of the water, there should be a responsible adult with a watchful eye who can jump in in case of an emergency at all times.

The Buddy Program

A partnership in the water is safer and more fun. When you swim with a buddy, you have someone watching out for you at all times, and also someone to  play with!

Feet First

When entering the water, go feet first; this will help prevent injury and paralysis. If diving in head first, make sure that the area is clearly marked for diving, and that nothing is in the way of your diving trajectory.

Testing 1-2-3

Though it may be hot outside, the water the water may still be too cold for your body! Put your toe into the water first to check the temperature of the water. If the water is too cold, jumping it could shock your system and make it more difficult to swim.

Be sure to always be aware of your surroundings and the risks while in the water. With these tips you can have a safe and fun water adventure.
