90% Disability Rating for VA Benefits

The VA disability rating system assigns each veteran a percentage based on how severely one or more service-related conditions affect their quality of life and everyday functioning. A 90% VA disability rating falls short of the maximum rating of 100%, but still provides significant monthly compensation and other benefits.

Below, the trusted veterans disability lawyers at Rob Levine Law explain what it means to have a 90% disability rating, what conditions typically qualify, and whether you may be eligible to increase your rating to 100%. If you have questions about the VA rating system or need assistance with your veterans disability benefits claim, our attorneys are ready to help you get the results you deserve.

What Does a 90% Disability Rating Mean?

A 90% VA disability rating indicates that your service-connected conditions significantly hinder your everyday life, but fall just short of total disability. Veterans with 90% disability ratings struggle greatly or need assistance to perform daily activities, and many are unable to work as a result.

While a 90% rating provides higher benefits than lower ratings, the difference in payment rates between 90% and 100% is quite steep. A veteran with no dependents and a 90% VA disability rating receives a base rate of $2,362.30 per month, while one with a 100% rating would receive $3,938.58.

The $1,576.28 monthly gap totals more than $18,000 over the course of a year. Thus, that last 10% is very much worth fighting for.

What Are Some Common Examples of 90% Disability Ratings?

In most circumstances, a veteran receives a 90% rating due to multiple disabling conditions, each of which is assigned an individual rating and combined using the VA’s schedule. For example, a veteran with one condition rated at 70% and another at 50% would have a combined rating of 85%, which rounds up to 90%.

Examples of common service-connected disabling conditions include the following:

  • Chronic pain
  • Amputations
  • Severe PTSD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Migraines
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory conditions

What Types of Benefits Are Available for a 90% Disability Rating?

In addition to monthly base payments, veterans with a 90% disability rating can receive free or low-cost medical, dental, and vision care through the VA, including specialized treatments for their conditions. If you have a dependent spouse, children, or parents, you can receive additional compensation for each. They may also be entitled to VA health care benefits, as well as financial support in the event of your death.

Those with certain conditions requiring additional support and assistance may be entitled to special monthly compensation payments as well. Other available VA benefits include Veteran Readiness and Employment services, which can help you find work, training, and educational opportunities that fit your specific needs.

Can A 90% Disability Rating Be Increased to 100%?

You can take multiple paths to potentially increase a 90% VA disability rating to a 100% rating, such as filing a new claim to include additional conditions or secondary disabilities. If your combined rating reaches 95%, the VA will round your rating up to 100%.

If your conditions have worsened since your initial rating, you can have your disabilities medically reevaluated before pursuing a claim for an increased rating. You can also appeal the VA’s decision.

Even if you do not receive a 100% rating, it’s still possible to obtain the maximum VA benefits rate through Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability, or TDIU. This program provides maximum benefits to veterans with less than a 100% disability rating if their conditions prevent them from holding “substantially gainful employment.”

If you have an individual disability rating of 60% or higher, or a combined rating of 70% for multiple conditions with one rated at least 40%, you may be eligible for TDIU benefits.
