How is Social Security Calculated?

Social security disability benefits are calculated based on the average lifetime earnings you made before your disability. How severe your disability does not affect your benefits. Most SSDI recipients receive anywhere between $700-1,700 a month. In 2018 the average SSDI recipient receives $1,197 monthly.

What is SSDI?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is calculated by your past earnings. It also is measured by how much money you contributed to social security taxes. You are ‘insured’ by social security if you have worked long enough to qualify. Usually, this means you would have to work five out of the last ten years. If you qualify for SSDI, it pays for benefits to you as well as certain family members.

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not rely on your past contribution to social security. This program helps subsidize the needs of disabled adults and children with limited income and resources. You must have less than $2,000 in assets to qualify.

How do I qualify?

In order to receive either SSDI or SSI, there are specific guidelines you need to qualify for. You will also have to apply and gather information about your medical condition, work experience, education history, etc. The application and approval process can be long and confusing. That is why it is useful to have an experienced social security lawyer on your side.

If you or a loved one believe you are eligible for SSDI or SSI contact Rob Levine Law today. Our experienced lawyers will make sure you are on the right track, and remember if you do not win, it’s free.
