GM SETTLES SELF-DRIVING CAR ACCIDENT- FIRST OF MANY
Self-driving cars are the new and innovate technology that manufacturing companies are using in their latest vehicles. Even large companies such as Uber and Lyft have been taking advantage of this technology. Though the technology is becoming quite popular, so is the controversy of it.
At the beginning of this month, General Motors Company agreed to settle a lawsuit involving a self-driving car accident. This is the first settlement of a self-driving accident thus far.
The incident occurred in December when a Cruise Automation 2016 Chevrolet Bolt while trying to pass it allegedly, hit a motorcyclist. The self-driving Chevy suddenly swerved back into the lane of the motorcyclist, colliding with it. The motorcyclist took disability and had to leave his job due to the severity of his injuries. At the time of the accident, the GM vehicle was in self-driving mode.
The motorcyclist sued GM for damages, attorney fees, and negligence. The San Francisco Police report stated that the motorcyclist merged into the lane before it was safe to do so, thus being the cause of the accident.
Though it seemed as if the driver was liable for the incident, GM settled the suit over the self-driving car accident. This type of accident will continue to become more frequent as the technology grows and is experienced with. It is important to be aware of this technology and its imperfections.
