Drinking and Driving Facts
The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate America with our friends and family. For many people this event may also include drinking alcohol. Just because Independence Day is a holiday does not minimize the dangers of intoxication.
Did you know?
Driving under the influence is a serious crime and can lead to serious crime and injury. There is absolutely no excuse for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
- Due to the increased frequency of accidents during the Fourth of July this day is considered one of the worst days for fatal car accidents according to insurance companies.
- Every day 29 people die in the U.S. from car crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.
- Car crashes involving drunk drivers cost over $44 billion in damages per year.
- Drinking and driving is illegal
- Even a first-time offense of impaired driving can cost the driver over $10,000 in fines.
Don’t contribute to these statistics. Focus on having fun responsibly and getting home safe this holiday by being or having a sober driver.
What is too much?
If you are drinking don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Drinking alcohol limits your ability to make safe decisions-which is something you need if you are operating a vehicle. In most states, driving with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.08 or greater is illegal; however, alcohol can start weakening your abilities with as low of a .02 BAC.
What happens to the body at .08 BAC?
At this stage of drinking, you lack judgment and communication skills. Your mind has lost some of its ability to hold short-term memories and you have a reduced ability to concentrate. Many people with this BAC level have no sense of how fast they are going in a vehicle and have a very hard time multi-tasking.
Designated Drivers Save Lives
Why risk crashing your car, going to jail, or injuring or killing yourself and others? If you choose to partake in drinking to celebrate the holiday, remember the responsibility you have to yourself and those around you. Choose to drink responsibly this Independence Day and always have a sober designated driver.
