Eligibility for Social Security Disability Benefits in Bridgeport, CT
Social Security offers two programs for individuals with disabilities: Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, and Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. While SSDI and SSI have similar medical eligibility for qualifying disabilities, they have some key differences. SSDI pays benefits to those with sufficient work histories and disabling conditions that prevent them from working. Meanwhile, SSI is a needs-based program available to disabled and blind individuals and those over age 65.
To be eligible for SSDI benefits, you must have a condition that meets the SSA’s definition of a disability. A qualifying disability must render you incapable of performing Substantial Gainful Activity, or SGA, which is work that generates income above a certain threshold set annually. In 2025, the monthly SGA income limit is $2,700 for blind people and $1,620 for others.
Qualifying disabilities must be expected to last for at least a year or result in death. Most conditions that prevent you from working can meet the SSA’s standards, from physical ailments like arthritis and spinal injuries to mental health disorders like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
You must also have earned sufficient work credits to qualify for SSDI benefits. Workers earn credits by paying payroll taxes. They can earn up to four credits per year. The required work credits for SSDI eligibility vary based on age.
SSI is only available to those with little to no income or assets. Thus, there is no work credit requirement for eligibility. However, to qualify with a disability, you must meet the same strict definition of disability required for SSDI.
The Social Security Disability Application and Appeals Process
Applying for Social Security Disability benefits usually follows a straightforward series of steps. The time it takes varies based on how far you must go for a final decision.
- Initial application: You can file your application online, by mail, by phone, or by visiting a local Social Security Office.
- First determination: You should receive a decision from the SSA within six to eight months. If you are accepted, the process will end here. If not, you’ll have to begin the appeals process.
- Reconsideration: Your first appeal option is to ask for a review by personnel not involved in the first decision.
- Requesting a hearing: If reconsideration is unsuccessful, you can also request a hearing with an administrative law judge. The judge will review the evidence and details behind your case and determine whether you were erroneously denied benefits.
- Appeals Council: The SSA Appeals Council is your last line of internal options to challenge a denial.
- Federal Court Review: If the Appeals Council rules against you, your only recourse left is to file a lawsuit and ask a federal court to review the SSA’s decisions.
You have 60 days to request an appeal after receiving a decision at each step, including filing a lawsuit. Our knowledgeable Bridgeport Social Security disability attorneys can help you draft a strong application, meet all applicable deadlines, and put you in the best position for success at each step.
Common Reasons Social Security Disability Claims in Bridgeport, CT Are Denied
The SSA often rejects Social Security Disability claims for similar reasons. Examples of common issues include:
- Lack of sufficient medical evidence to establish a qualifying disability or prove that the applicant can’t perform gainful work
- The applicant failed to follow prescribed treatments or adequately address their condition
- Technical errors, such as missing or incorrect information on the application forms
- Missed deadlines or other procedural errors
- The applicant doesn’t meet the work history requirements for SSDI or the income and asset limits for SSI
Our disability benefits team can help you correct any errors or issues with your application and give you the best chance of getting approved early in the process.
