Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability, or TDIU, allows veterans who are unable to work due to a service-connected disability with less than a 100% disability rating to receive the maximum possible VA benefits. The program can provide a significant boost in income to those who aren’t considered totally disabled but are still unable to earn a living on their own.

Below, the knowledgeable veterans disability lawyers at Rob Levine Law explain TDIU’s eligibility requirements and how the program works. If you’re having trouble understanding how to qualify for TDIU or need help pursuing a VA benefits claim, our experienced legal team is ready to assist you.

What Does Total Disability Individual Unemployability Do for Veterans?

TDIU can provide veterans with service-connected disabling conditions rated at lower than 100% a substantial financial boost above their current VA benefit payments.

The VA assigns a percentage rating to each service-connected disabling condition, with a maximum rating of 100%. The total monthly compensation and benefits available are based on the rating. For vets who haven’t received a 100% ‘total disability’ rating but are still unable to work due to their service-related conditions, TDIU allows them to receive the maximum monthly compensation.

As of February 2026, veterans with a 100% disability rating or TDIU eligibility can receive a base monthly payment of $3,938.58, which is $1,576.28 more than a similar vet would get for a 90% rating. That adds to a difference of more than $18,000 per year, with an even wider gap for lower ratings.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements for TDIU Benefits?

You can qualify for TDIU benefits if you’re unable to work because of one or more service-connected conditions. To qualify, you must have a single service-connected condition rated at least 60%, or a combined rating or multiple conditions of at least 70%, with one condition rated at least 40%.

Any conditions that prevent you from holding “substantially gainful employment” can qualify for TDIU benefits. Examples of disabilities that can meet VA TDIU eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Chronic pain
  • PTSD
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Heart problems
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Neurological disorders

How Can You Know Whether You Qualify for VA TDIU?

Tdiu self assessment checklist

If you meet all the requirements listed above, you likely qualify for VA TDIU benefits. However, you’ll need to provide thorough medical evidence to establish that your condition prevents you from maintaining gainful employment. Gathering medical records, doctors’ notes, and supportive statements from employers or vocational experts is key to filing a successful TDIU application.

The VA may also consider your work and education histories while reviewing your claim, so it’s important to include as much information as you can. If you’re unsure whether you qualify for TDIU or don’t know where to start, reach out to our trusted veterans disability team today for assistance.
