So when you’re caring about a loved one and you’ve put them in a nursing home, you really want to make sure that they’re not getting abused. And so the question is what signs to look for and right? So first of all, it’s the physical appearance of your loved one. And right, so are they being cared for? Someone’s taking care of their hair and their skin. Do they have bed sores? Are they being turned properly? Right? So, is someone really managing their care?
Secondly, are they a slip and fall risk? And we’re making sure that we’re taking care of those precautions. The side rails are up. The anti-slip for their feet are on their feet all the time. Do they have their call rail button near them? So, if they need attention, they can get it. If they’re communicative, you want to make sure you have those open conversations like, “How are the people who work in the nursing home taking care of you? mom, dad, grandpa, whoever that loved one is, and make sure that they’re attentive to their needs and that they’re taking care of them and not abusing them. Often parents or elderly are afraid to speak out because they’re afraid of retribution by the people who work at the nursing home. So, you really want to prompt those questions and dig deep to get to make sure they feel comfortable talking to you. And you can always look at the nursing notes. You have every right to be looking at the notes and see what’s happening and see what the care is to make sure it matches the story.
